Department of Animal Control is responsible for the operations of Modoc County Animal Services. The Sheriff's Office Animal Control unit provides service to all the townships within Modoc County, including but not limited to Cal-Pines, Cedarville, Eagleville, Fort Bidwell, Likely, Adin, Lookout, and Newell.
The Department of Animal Control is responsible for overseeing and enforcement regarding compliance with Parvo, Distemper, Rabies Vaccines, and all pet licensing within Modoc County. The Animal Control Officer works in conjunction with Modoc's Environmental Health Officer.
The Animal Control Officer focuses on the abandoned, stranded, victimized and animals at large in Modoc County. Shelter for these animals makes the community safer and in many cases provides a loving home through the local High Plateau Humane Society, for the animals that are not claimed. The State of California regulates Food and Agriculture codes. These codes require extended holding periods for stray, feral, and relinquished pets. The law allows more time for animal adoption and the results are subsequently overcrowding at shelters.
You can help reduce animal overpopulation by spaying or neutering your pets. All animals adopted from shelters must be spayed or neutered. A law in effect since January 1, 2000, requires an owner whose animals are impounded to pay fines and additional fees, if those animals are not spayed or neutered.
To help combat the shelter overcrowding problem, the Department of Animal Control works hand in hand with the local High Plateau Humane Society http://www.highplateauhumanesociety.org/ and the Modoc Veterinary Center
