Modoc County Sheriff Mike Poindexter

Modoc County will always be home to Mike and his family. He was born at United States Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton, California in 1956.  Mike followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Marine Corps himself at 18 years of age. He was Honorably Discharged from the Corps as a Sergeant in November of 1977.

Mike began his law enforcement career with the Highway Patrol in May of 1978. During Mike’s 28 years of service with the State of California he held a wide variety of assignments including but not limited to:

  • Road Patrol and Motorcycle Duty in Central Los Angeles.
  • Heads of State and Dignitary Protection
  • Narcotics Agent
  • Canine Handler and trainer.

 

Mike served the last 19 years of his CHP career in Modoc County. He served two tours of duty covering approximately seven years as an agent of the Modoc County Interagency Narcotics Task Force and proudly served as a reserve Patrolman, for the City of Alturas Police Department from September of 2006 through May of 2010. On June 8, 2010 Mike became the Modoc County Sheriff elect and was appointed by the Modoc County Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy created by Sheriff Gentry on June 30, 2010.
Mike has been married to his lovely wife Kelley for 28 years. Mike and Kelley raised their four children in Modoc County while enjoying the beautiful rural and secure life style Modoc County has to offer. Their three daughters each expanded on the great education they received in Modoc County. April earning a Master’s Degree from San Diego State University, Danielle a Bachelors degree from Sacramento State and Niki a Bachelors degree from Simpson University in Redding. They are also very proud of their son KC. KC became a third generation United States Marine following High School in Modoc. He served in Hit, Iraq during the surge and was also Honorably Discharged from the Corps as a Sergeant in May of 2009. We are proud to say that KC graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in December 2009, he is currently working in Alameda County, out of the Dublin CHP office.
Mike and Kelley have been and continue to be active in numerous community endeavors. They now have six grand children and enjoy every minute they spend with them. Mike is committed to do all in his power to keep Modoc County a safe and desirable place to live.
