K-9 Unit

Information on the Modoc County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit
MCSO K9 Handlers

In 2014, the Modoc County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit was founded. We have three dogs in all. Depending on their specialty, they may receive training in scent work for search and rescue, drug detection, evidence, article searches, and or protection. A deputy must have at least two years of patrol experience to become a K-9 handler. They must be able to manage the dog in a variety of circumstances. Deputies need to be in good physical shape. After completing a five–week academy, handlers must commit to 16 hours of monthly training. The deputy handler and the K-9 must finish annual certifications in each specialty. K-9 care is the responsibility of handlers around –the clock. The unit is funded through donations to the Modoc County Sheriff’s K-9 Association, which is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization.

Modoc County Sheriff's K-9 Association is a local non-profit that supports our K-9 deputies and handlers! These K-9's backup our handlers everyday and get them home safe to their families! We have three K-9 deputies now and are completely funded by community donations! Jax, Gnash, & Hogle are a huge part of our MCSO family and we are so thankful for that!

Your donation stays in Modoc and goes directly to pay for things like dog food, veterinarian care and training! if you'd like to donate, you can mail a donation to us at P.O. Drawer 460, Alturas, CA 96101
